It's New!!

Published 10/2010 Reaching Out - Reaching In

Like the rest of our KindTree - Autism Rocks’ volunteers, I stick with it because I really enjoy the things I get to do with KindTree - so it stays fun. One of those fun things for me is creating the website, www.kindtree.org. That’s where we post photos from past events, news articles, notices, and a slew of autism information and links. We also have all the images collected over the years from over 35 artists on the spectrum, images that you can send to your friends and family, or keep for yourself as beautifully framed pieces, prints and notecards. All of them are outstanding.

But over time, our website began to loose functionality (just like me..?) and got cluttered and old-fashioned. So with the help of the young genius Jake Roberts, we now have a NEW www.kindtree.org! Ta Da!

Images are displayed in categories, the gallery is searchable, and there are more purchase options. It’s so easy to see what your choices are and easy to appreciate the artists’ and their work. And it looks great. The same search capability is there for news articles, both new and older archived stories. And events, too, are searchable for a much more user friendly Community Calendar. There’s a page dedicated to Mary-Minn’s Stim Pages since 2000. It’s easy to read about our mission and discover ways to help or participate. Some old content has been removed, information is more current and accessible.

So please take a moment to see what Jake and I have put together for KindTree - Autism Rocks. Let me know what you think. I think you’ll like it.

In other news, I’m pleased to announce that Pat Dopler and his partner Maggie Pecora, both long time Camp/Retreat volunteers, have joined our Board of Directors. These folks bring a deep commitment to folks on the spectrum as well as a balance of skills and a great attitude. Welcome.

We still have some spots available on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in helping further our mission and leading us into the future, please don’t hesitate to call.

We are also creating an Advisory Board, a group of people who will help us identify resources and support, and help raise awareness in the community about KindTree - Autism Rocks. Their meeting requirements would be minimal, but their contribution of great value. If that approach appeals to you, or if you just want to be more involved, let us know. Our Camp/Retreat had over 70 volunteers last year. We need you, too.

KindTree - Autism Rocks presently has a "Scarecrow Display" competing for a $1000 best in show prize at Johnson Brothers Greenhouse, north of Coburg. So if you are looking for fall plants, or pumpkins, or outdoor decorative touches, drive on up there and check out our scary display. After your panic and fright subsides, don’t forget to vote often...

Take a look at the long group picture on page 6. Our unique Camp/Retreat this summer was so much fun. We had more people that ever, more participation in the many events, more people stayed till the very end, and we had more positive feedback than ever. Thanks so much to all the great volunteers. Your efforts have made this gathering a success year after year, along with our Art Shows and all our other endeavors celebrating the Autism Community. Your energy will carry us into the future, too. A future of even more art, recreation and community. Together, we will make all our dreams reality.
