KindTree is dedicated to serving and celebrating the Autism Community through art, education, and recreation. With warm hearted whimsy, an open sense of family and a deep level of caring, we reach inside ourselves to embrace our flaws, gather our strengths, and offer our love while reaching out to people with autism spectrum disorders, their families and care givers. Through the power of self-advocacy in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect, autistic and neuro-normal people alike can work toward self- realization.

It's almost that time

As you may have noticed, it's election time again. Men and women from the local to the national level are seeking power over your lives. Please give them your attention so that you can truly know how various candidates feel about people with disabilities, the support they need, the challenges they represent. Decisions they make can and will affect you deeply. Don't leave it to chance. Register to vote today. Be an American.

Almost 200 of us had a great time at this year's Retreat. Our next issue will feature pictures and more. Speaking of the next "Reaching Out - Reaching In" issue, if you would like to get one in the mail and don't - or if you don't need one sent to your mailing address, please let us know. Drop a note to autism@kindtree.org and we'll get it right.

This is basically an updated calendar issue. More news next time...

The Developmental Disabilities posting of 4 jobs is open on the Lane County jobs page. The link is www.lanecounty.org/jobs

The original posting was submitted when we had three openings, but we are hoping to fill four from this posting. You will however only see the three job descriptions because we submit this material several weeks prior to the time when the posting opens.

We have also combined efforts to put a little display together for people who may be interested in this position and I have provided a link here. Please feel free to share this link with anyone who may be interested.

NextStep Recycling needs YOU!

Heavens to Betsy! NextStep has been moving forward so fast my head is spinning. This summer is a hopping time around the shop and we are looking for some help! It seems that everyone is cleaning out their garages and offices at the same time. Some businesses are closing their doors and we are helping out with their recycling-so we are about to pop with material that needs to be sorted. Our ship date for the container of educational aid to Guatemala has been delayed until the Aug 25th-so, we are running out of room!

We need help moving this material through the building. Please call Melissa at 686-2366 ext 117 or email her at melissa@nextsteprecycling.org to come on down and give us a hand!

Our managers are looking for folks to:

Sort material in receiving: requires the ability to lift. You can sign up for 2-8 hours at a time
Record material being sorted in receiving: does not require lifting, does require good hand writing and database entry skills. Can sign up for 2-8 hours at a time
Test hardware in refurbishing: this requires a bigger time commitment, must be willing to put in a minimum of 4 hours at a time so we can give you the information you need to be successful
Volunteer in our ReUSE Store: for the next two weeks we are dropping prices low, low to assist parents in getting school supplies for their kids-it will be busy in the store and we are down two volunteers, ouch! We sure could use your help sorting, cleaning, and shelving material. It is a hoot to work in the store and see all the cool gadgets and gizmos that come through. You too can have fun there!

If you have a business or work at a business that supports community service, please gather up a bunch of your folks and give our volunteer coordinator, Melissa a call!

Did I say we need you? YES! We do!

I hope to see you soon!
lorraine

Letter to Your Teacher

Fill in the blanks and answer the numbered questions to create a letter for your new teacher. She/he will thank you!

Hi, my name is _________________________________and I am in your class this year. I want you to know a little about me. I’m nervous to be in your class because it’s new and I don’t know what to expect. I need some time to adjust and then I will feel comfortable. Please don’t judge me on my first few weeks. As the time goes by, you will be amazed by the skills you never thought I possessed. I sometimes look like I don’t understand. That’s just because I don’t have the same expressions and reactions as other people. I might not look at you when you talk but that doesn’t mean I didn’t hear you. I did. In fact I usually hear more than most people. As I become familiar with your classroom I will begin to shine. A great way to speed up this process is letting me know what to expect. Written or picture schedules for the day reduce my anxiety. A five minute warning before a change of activity can help me greatly too. You are my teacher and I look up to you. I want to succeed this year but I can’t do it without your help and most importantly, your belief in me that I can do it!

1. What is my general disposition?

2. What am I really, really good at?

3. What do I absolutely LOVE doing?

4. What do I absolutely HATE doing?

5. What academics are my strong areas?

6. What academics do I need a lot of extra help with?

7. Which skills would my parents really like me to work on this year?

8. How do you know when I’m getting frustrated?

9. What can you do to calm me down before the storm hits?

10. Too late! The storm hit! What can you do to calm me down?

11. What strategies work really well to get me to do something I don’t want to do?

12. What typically makes me laugh?

13. What consequences back-fire and don’t give the desired results?

14. I don’t like consequences, but which consequences work well for me?

15. I would also like you to know…
