KindTree is dedicated to serving and celebrating the Autism Community through art, education, and recreation. With warm hearted whimsy, an open sense of family and a deep level of caring, we reach inside ourselves to embrace our flaws, gather our strengths, and offer our love while reaching out to people with autism spectrum disorders, their families and care givers. Through the power of self-advocacy in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect, autistic and neuro-normal people alike can work toward self- realization.

KindTree has been gearing up and raising money for our autistic art show this April at DIVA, on Broadway and Olive. I cordially invite you all to peruse gift ideas at our online boutique, kindtree.org. There you will find holiday cards by autist luminaries Reneé Curtiss, Melissa Dahl, Carl Kinney and Frank Flanders, plus year-round greeting cards by a plethora of artistic autists, including myself. Our webmaster Tim Mueller has put a tiger in the website’s tank; everything loads like wildfire now. Tim is making separate rooms for each artist, as well as different moods and occasions. Mosey on into mine; let me turn down the lights and show you some of my “etchings.”

I am pitching my own art not only because I am incurable romantic but because I am donating my profits (all artists receive half of every sale) to KindTree’s art program.

Café Press, in one of our web-rooms, has some nifty autism-celebrating apparel. One such fashion statement is an organic tee-shirt with one of my tweaky cartoon drawings, the profits from which–again–will go into KindTree’s art program rather than my pocket.

Those who have had it with too much stuff can support KindTree by donating money for frames, display materials, and retreat expenses. A plaque with your name at April's art show could commemorate such a donation. Call 521-7208 for more information.

Happy holidays!

KindTree Volunteers Win Awards

Friday, November 4th, the ARC of Lane County help their annual Awards Dinner. Honored there were Cheryl Nel Applegate and Nan Lester.

Nel Applegate, who has been KindTree's support group's volunteer facilitator for over 5 years, was awarded the Lisl Wechter Award for a long career supporting people with disabilities. She began her carreer as a direct care giver and has been a Lane County social worker for 16 years, earning the respect of her peers and the love of many of the people she helps. A compassionate and dedicated person, Nel is a deserving recipient. Congratulations.

Nan Lester was also honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Nan has been an effective and tenacious advocate for people on the autism spectrum for 10 years. Her work with the 4-J schools has raised the bar for services to kids with autism. She is a founding member of the Lane County Chapter of the Autism Society of Oregon and a volunteer consultant for KindTree as well as helping at many of our events. In early 2006 she plans on opening her new consulting business. Thank you, Nan.

KindTree is pleased to see our Autism Community being recognized by the larger disablility community through the ARC. We are all in this together. All of us.

Hi Tim,
I want to thank you for all of the support, information and energy you put into helping the ASD community and their families here in Lane county.  Even though I don't see you that much I want you to know how good it feels to be able to parents in Springfield about
KindTree  and all that you do and the supports that have been put into place. Please thank your crew for me and all of Springfield.

Sincerely, Susan Parks, Springfield School District

To whom it may concern,

First -Thanks.  Great web site.  My son just turned 3 in September and was diagnosed with Autism.  Basically his speech is delayed and might have some other problems.  I work so I needed to put him in a day care.  He does well with kids and is social, but does not talk yet.  He understands most things that are told to him.  Well, anyway once kindercare found  out that Jason was being evaluated for special needs they kicked him out.  Now I have until this Wednesday to find a place for him.  I  am having trouble finding a place that will take my son because of his  Autism.  He does need some one on one care and help with his  speech.  I have contacted the early intervention center and also Head start.  I have a meeting with them on the 18th of this month.  I was just wondering if you might have some suggestions of places that would benefit my son and his Autism.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

It has become increasingly clear to us as we have reviewed information on brain development that this is a critical area, and the need to reach many people who can impact brain development in fetuses and young children is monumentally important.  Did you know, for example, that studies have shown that a 6-month old fetus -- subject to second-hand trauma because the pregnant mother is traumatized, say, by domestic violence -- can experience PTSD as a toddler because of the earlier trauma?  And that because developing fetal brain cells are diverted from doing what they would have done, to instead deal with the trauma, permanent negative effects can result?  Did you know that some brain cells in babies up to 2 years, 9 months old still haven't decided what they will do in the overall picture and that what they do, or not, can be impacted by substances and/or trauma?
