KindTree is dedicated to serving and celebrating the Autism Community through art, education, and recreation. With warm hearted whimsy, an open sense of family and a deep level of caring, we reach inside ourselves to embrace our flaws, gather our strengths, and offer our love while reaching out to people with autism spectrum disorders, their families and care givers. Through the power of self-advocacy in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect, autistic and neuro-normal people alike can work toward self- realization.

Autism Awareness Walk This Saturday in Salem / OCDD Seeks Input / New Books

Greetings,

We have one more big event for 2005 – our second annual Mask Making Party, coming up on Sunday, October 30, from 4 – 7 PM at Cozmic Pizza downtown. This event was great fun last year (see the photo album here), so we decided to do it again. We have lots of stickers, feathers, sequins and more to glue onto a bunch of different mask styles. CenterStage Karaoke will join us to play frightening music – and invite you to be part of the show. Free prizes, games, a raffle drawing, and a grand parade will add to the fun. It’s a fundraiser, too, so please come on downtown and play with your friends from KindTree. See you there!

KindTree received a check in the mail from The Lane Arts Council for our "From the Studio to the Gallery" Art Show expansion. We are expecting another from VSA in Washington to help with this project. But we need your help, too. The program has a budget of $2,100. $600 will come from LAC, $250 from sales percentages, $200 from in-kind support from area framers (to be announced), $200 from GreyWolf Projects and over $400 from VSA. There is still a need for more support – about $400.

Our plan is to support artists with classes, tutoring and supplies at the front end and framing expenses and gallery placement at the back end. We have a tentative agreement with DIVA to open their new “Organization Room” with our Traveling Art Show next April. You can be a sponsor with as little as $50 - your name on a nice plaque at the exhibit. Carl, Melissa, Frank, Renee and many more will thank you. Please help make it happen.

Our artists have done so well this year – a truly successful show at SUNY in Oswego, NY, (Gallery Web Page) netting over $400 in sales, a great weekend at Art & the Vineyard, and inclusion of both Carl Kinney and Ryo Mastrogiovanni in VSA’s upcoming “No Boundaries” exhibition opening in Seattle next month. These folks are working hard. Let them know you recognize their efforts. Be a part of their success. Send your check to KindTree Art Program, 2096 1/2 Arthur St, Eugene, 97045.

On that note, we'd like to offer a special thanks to Auldi La's Espresso Truffle Chocolates by Toni Delaney. She has donated nearly $50 from the sale of her chocolates, and she has a child on the spectrum. She offers her product at Wal Mart's West Eugene front door. And to Tim Savage, who has stepped forward and offered his help refurbishing computers. Thanks, both of you!

OCDD Seeks Input

Please help us identify the most pressing needs of people with developmental disabilities and their families in Oregon. We also want your thoughts on how we can help meet those needs. Your opinion is very important. It will help us prioritize our work for the next 5 years.

The Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities, Oregon Institute on Disability & Development at OHSU, Center on Human Development at UO, and Oregon Advocacy Center are the agencies in Oregon that receive federal funding through the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act (DD Act) to do advocacy, research, training and legal rights protection related to developmental disabilities. (This is different from the state dollars that fund services to people with developmental disabilities).

Please take a few minutes to respond to this survey: http://healthwellness.org/surveys/priority_survey.htm

If you need assistance, please call 1-800-292-4154. Your input is appreciated!

October 22 – 23 BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF PEOPLE WITH AUTISM - TOO IMPORTANT TO IGNORE! FREE!
Brothers and sisters of children with autism share many of the concerns experienced by their parents. Because the sibling relationship is the longest-lasting relations in the family, brothers and sisters are likely to experience concerns through their lives. Despite their importance, siblings' concerns are too often ignored.
The Autism Society of Oregon (ASO) is sponsoring a two-day workshop conducted by Don Meyer, director of the Sibling Support Project and creator of the Sibshop model. ASO will be starting a Sibshop in the Portland metro area in 2006! Anyone wishing to be a volunteer or facilitator for the Portland Sibshop should attend these presentations to learn how to implement the Sibshop model for school age siblings.
“What to do about the concerns often experienced by siblings: peer issues, resentment, loss, concerns about the future”
“How to increase the unique opportunities experienced by siblings: compassion, advocacy, insight and tolerance”
“Strategies to decrease sibling concerns”

TO REGISTER, PLEASE CALL ASO'S OFFICE AT (503)636-1676. IF YOU GET OUR ANSWER MACHINE, PLEASE GIVE US YOUR NAME, TELEPHONE NUMBER, AND WHETHER OR NOT YOU WILL ATTEND DAY 1, DAY 2 OR BOTH DAYS. PLEASE LET US KNOW YOUR INTEREST IN THE SIBSHOP. FOR EXAMPLE, YOU ARE INTERESTED AS A PARENT OR YOU ARE FROM AN AGENCY IN CENTRAL OREGON AND YOU WANT TO TAKE THE 2-DAY SESSIONS SO THAT YOU CAN SET UP A SIBSHOP IN CENTRAL OREGON. http://www.oregonautism.com

New Books

Autism Today’s Book of the Month Page

New Book about Autism offering Hope, Support, and Guidance to other Parents

Nearly 100 mothers from around the United States, and five foreign countries, who have been featured in the new Autism Enhancement Publishing release: Autism~Heartfelt Thoughts from Mothers.

The book's author, Judy Lynne, knows what it is like to raise a child with autism through all of the various trials, tribulations, troubles, and triumphs. She has a 21-year old daughter who was diagnosed with autism at age 4. Her concept for this book was to give the mothers a voice. She asked each mother to submit their thoughts regarding their biggest challenges, greatest blessings, and words of wisdom to other parents. She also asked for photographs of the mothers and their child (or children) with autism.

What she received from these mothers was true and honest heartfelt responses. When they talk about just how hard it is to raise a special needs child it appears as if the daily challenges are endless. Yet all of these mothers also express that their child is their greatest blessing, a unique being on this earth who they learn from and love deeply. And their words of wisdom to other parents shout "Never give up on your child!" It is a book of hope, and book of love, and a book of courage.

Parents who have children with autism will identify with the challenges, share in the blessings, and gain strength from the words of wisdom presented in this book. Friends and family members of these parents will get a glimpse into the real world of autism and find a new appreciation for what parents of special needs children go through on a daily basis.

You can find the book at http://www.AutismThoughts.com, in Barnes & Noble stores, Amazon & the Autism Asperger Publishing Company
