The Disabilities At Work newsletter is provided six times per year to Human Resource professionals and others as a source of information regarding the issues surrounding employment of qualified people with disabilities.

KESSLER SURVEY: A LONG WAY TO GO
=======================================================
According to a Kessler/National Organization on Disability survey,
only three percent of people who identify themselves as having a
disability are working. Among other things, the survey showed
that in comparison to people without disabilities, the largest
gap between individuals with and without disabilities remains
employment.

BUSINESS SIMULATION TRAINING FOR NEW JERSEY STUDENTS
=======================================================
Through its LearnDoEarn Student Achievement System,
the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the New
Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development to
provide free week-long business simulation “Boot Camps” this
summer for college-bound students with disabilities who will
be entering the ninth or tenth grade this fall.

CONNECTING TO BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Businesses owned by individuals with disabilities can increase
their access to potential contracting opportunities with major
corporations, government agencies and other disability-owned
businesses through the Disability Supplier Diversity Program®.
This program connects owners to a nationwide network of
corporate and government procurement professionals,
disability advocates, and other certified disability-owned
businesses.

TICKET TO WORK

On a recent Disabilities At Work Radio Program, Paula Vieillet,
president of Employment Options, Inc. discussed the Ticket to
Work Program, Employment Networks and how she matches people
with disabilities with employers looking to hire them.

$20 MILLION GRANT FROM DOL
=======================================================
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recently announced
the availability of approximately $20 million to fund
programs that will improve education, training and
employment opportunities for adults and youth with
disabilities. The goal of the Disability Employment Initiative
is to provide better employment opportunities for people with
disabilities.

THEME FOR NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT MONTH

“Profit by Investing in Workers With Disabilities” is the
theme the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability
Employment (ODEP) has chosen for National Disability
Employment Awareness Month in October.

workers with disabilities in the workplace are common. The
