ELOQUENT LESSONS FROM THE KING’S SPEECH

=======================================================

 

With the recent Academy Award notoriety generated by “The

King’s Speech,” Disabilities At Work Radio (DAWR) focused

a March program on stuttering. Each guest graced the discussion

with a unique eloquence in describing how he or she managed the

affliction in life and on the job. One of the guests was Maria

McGrath, U.S. regional director of the McGuire Program, an

internationally recognized program that helps people recover

from stuttering. This is a continuation of the conversation from

that program.

AT&T’S INCLUSION STRATEGY

=======================================================

 

Recently, Disabilities At Work Radio conducted an interview with 

executives from AT&T Labs about the latest technologies that can

help make life easier for people with disabilities. The show also

focused on the company’s inclusion strategy. The conversation

about inclusion is continued below with Elizabeth Dixon, senior

HR specialist for Diversity and Inclusion at AT&T.

NEW RULES FOR DISABILITY CLAIMS

=======================================================

 

New regulations born from revisions to the Americans with

Disabilities Act (ADA) go into effect on May 24, 2011 and

some of them may radically alter the way a company

evaluates an employee’s claim of a disability.

HIRING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES – WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

President Obama recently signed an executive order directing the 

federal government, the nation's largest employer, to become a

model for the employment of individuals with disabilities.

INCENTIVES FOR HIRING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

=======================================================

 

Tax incentives for private employers who hire and employ people

with disabilities are available.

 

A business with $1 million or less in gross receipts for the prior

year or with no more than 30 employees during the past year

is eligible for the Targeted Jobs Tax Credit, which is 50

percent of expenditures made to comply with requirements

of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The tax credit ranges 

from $250 to $10,250.

WAKING UP TO BRAIN INJURIES

=======================================================

 

The numbers are staggering. Brain injuries are the number one

cause of death and disability for American children and young adults.

Over three million new cases of brain injury occur each year with over

765,000 American youth entering an emergency department resulting

in over 80,000 hospitalizations, over 17,000 permanent disabilities and

over 11,000 deaths.

SARAH JANE BRAIN PROJECT

=======================================================

 

One of the most compelling Disabilities At Work Radio programs in

2010 focused on brain injuries and featured Patrick Donohue,

whose five-day old daughter Sarah Jane sustained a severe brain

injury after she was shaken violently by her baby nurse.
